Rollport

Troubleshooting

The Mac will not open Rollport

Apple has not notarized Rollport yet, so macOS blocks it the first time you open it. Close the message. Then open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

Windows says it protected your PC

Rollport is not signed yet, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warns about it. Click More info, then Run anyway.

Windows does not find the iPhone

Windows needs Apple's USB driver to see the iPhone. Install Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store, or iTunes. Then connect the iPhone again. Get Apple Devices

Linux does not find the iPhone

Rollport reaches the iPhone through usbmuxd. Install it with your package manager, then connect the iPhone again:

Debian, Ubuntu
sudo apt install usbmuxd
Fedora
sudo dnf install usbmuxd

usbmuxd starts when an iPhone is plugged in and stops when the last one is unplugged, so until then Rollport asks you to connect the iPhone. If Rollport says Cannot see iPhones while the iPhone is plugged in, usbmuxd did not start or stopped answering. Restart it:

sudo systemctl restart usbmuxd

If your usbmuxd listens somewhere else than /var/run/usbmuxd, set USBMUXD_SOCKET_ADDRESS to its socket path or host:port.

Nothing happens when I connect the iPhone

Unlock the iPhone. The first time, tap Trust if it is your own computer, then enter your passcode. If Rollport still does not see it, try another cable or another USB port.

Trust was refused

Don't Trust was tapped on the iPhone, so it does not ask again for now. Unplug the iPhone and plug it in again. When it asks whether to trust this computer, tap Trust if it is your own computer, then enter your passcode.

If the iPhone does not ask again, open Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Location & Privacy on the iPhone.

Cannot connect to the iPhone

The iPhone is plugged in, but it did not answer as expected. The red text under the message says what went wrong. Unplug the iPhone, unlock it, and plug it in again. Rollport keeps trying every few seconds. If that does not help, restart the computer and the iPhone.

Cannot read the camera roll

The iPhone trusts this computer, but it is locked, so it does not show its photos. Unlock it. Rollport tries again every few seconds and continues on its own.

Cannot use this folder

Rollport cannot open or write to the folder. The red text says why. Common reasons:

  • The folder was moved, renamed, or deleted, or the disk it is on is not connected.
  • You do not have permission to write to the folder.
  • The folder stopped responding, which happens with network drives and sleeping disks.
  • rollport-library.db in the folder is damaged.

Connect the disk or fix the folder, then choose it again, or choose another folder.

Not enough space

Rollport always leaves 2 GB free on the disk, so the computer keeps working. Before an import, it tells you when everything will not fit and how much to free up. You can also choose a shorter date range or fewer media types in Options.

If the disk fills up during an import, Rollport copies what fits and says how much space the rest needs. Free up space, then click Continue.

Some files could not be copied

Rollport tries each file three times. When a file still cannot be copied, Rollport goes on with the others, then names the file that failed. The file stays on the iPhone, and the next import tries it again.

When the import itself fails, for example because the folder cannot be written to, Rollport says Import failed. Everything imported before that stays in the folder. The red text says what went wrong.

Photos kept in iCloud are missing

With Optimize iPhone Storage on, the iPhone keeps only a small copy of many photos and videos, and the original is in iCloud. Rollport imports what is on the iPhone, so it does not see these originals. It can say that all photos are already here while some are missing.

To import them, open Settings on the iPhone, tap your name, then iCloud and Photos, and choose Download and Keep Originals. The iPhone needs enough free space for them. When it has downloaded them, import again.

Another import is writing into this folder

Only one import at a time can write into a folder, so two imports never mix up its record. Rollport is already importing into this folder, on this computer or another one. Wait until it is done, then import again.

The folder is on a network drive

Rollport can import into a folder on a network drive, but if the connection drops, the import stops. What is already copied stays there, and you can click Continue later. A folder on an internal or external disk is more reliable.

The window is empty on Linux

Some graphics drivers do not work with WebKitGTK, which draws Rollport's window. With the NVIDIA driver, Rollport sets __NV_DISABLE_EXPLICIT_SYNC=1 itself, which stops the crash on Wayland ("Error 71") and keeps the GPU drawing. A value you set yourself wins, so __NV_DISABLE_EXPLICIT_SYNC=0 turns this off. The AppImage changes screens without animation, because its older WebKitGTK crashes on it.

If the window still opens empty, or closes again at once, start Rollport from a terminal with these commands, one at a time, until one works. They draw without the GPU, so screens change without animation:

WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1 rollport
WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1 rollport

With the AppImage, run it from its folder instead of rollport, for example:

WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1 ./Rollport.AppImage

Please also open an issue with your Linux distribution and graphics card, so we can fix it for everyone.

Windows cannot open the photos or videos

The iPhone saves photos as HEIC and videos as HEVC, and Rollport copies them as they are. Windows needs two extensions from the Microsoft Store to open them: HEIF Image Extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions (paid). The photos need both.

To take new photos as JPEG instead, open Settings › Camera › Formats on the iPhone and choose Most Compatible. Photos you already took stay HEIC.

Make Rollport forget its folders

Quit Rollport, then delete its settings folder:

Mac
~/Library/Application Support/com.artificiadrian.rollport
Windows
%APPDATA%\com.artificiadrian.rollport
Linux
~/.config/com.artificiadrian.rollport

That folder holds only the folder you used last, the folder of each iPhone, and the window size. Your photos and folders are not touched. The next time you open Rollport, it starts as if newly installed.
